The Jewish people were waiting. Longing. Desperate for a Messiah who would deliver them. They knew the prophecies, they held the promises, and they were certain that their Saviour would come in grandeur. A king. A ruler. Someone who would overthrow oppression and establish a powerful kingdom on earth.
But when Jesus came, He came quietly. Born in a stable, raised in an ordinary town, walking among ordinary people. He did not ride in on a chariot. He did not come with armies or thrones. He came with compassion. He touched lepers, sat with sinners, wept with the broken. And many missed Him.
They did not see the Saviour they expected. So they rejected the one they were given.
It is easy to read that story and wonder how they could have been so blind. Yet if we are honest, we do the same.
How often do we ask God for something, and then overlook the answer when it does not come in the form we imagined? We pray for strength, but it comes wrapped in trials that build our endurance. We pray for financial provision, and someone offers us a job that feels too small. We pray for healing, but instead of an instant miracle, God sends wise counsel and steady rest.
Sometimes we are so fixated on what we think God’s answer should look like that we miss the one He lovingly sent.
Maybe the relationship you dismissed was actually a gift sent to refine you. Maybe the opportunity you overlooked was the door you were praying to walk through. Maybe peace was waiting, but you rejected it because it did not come with applause or validation.
So let me ask you: Are you spiritually blind in the same way the Jews were? Are you missing Jesus in your situation because He is showing up differently than you expected?
In Luke 19:41–42, as Jesus approached Jerusalem, He wept over the city and said, “If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes.” That line pierces the heart. It reminds us that peace can stand right in front of us and still remain hidden if we are looking through the wrong lens.
Today, I invite you to pause. Ask God to clear your vision. Ask Him to open your eyes to the way He is moving in your life, even if it looks nothing like what you had in mind.
Sometimes God answers with a whisper when we are waiting for a shout. Sometimes He gives us manna when we are craving meat. And sometimes, in the most unexpected places, He gives us the very thing our soul needs the most.
So let us pray, with honest and open hearts:
Dear Jesus,
Help me not to miss You. Not just in church or in big moments, but in the everyday. Open my eyes to see where You are moving, even when I do not recognise the form. Soften my heart so I can embrace what You are doing, even when it interrupts my expectations.
May I never reject what You sent just because it does not look the way I thought it would. And if I am overlooking a blessing today, show me. I do not want to miss the peace You have prepared for me.
Amen.
With Love,
Amanda
